When Spenco Medical advised us that they were coming out with a new versions of the Total Support Insoles, I was concerned that it would be just another roll out of the low, neutral, and high arch style of an insole product -as that is the new trend of the shoe insole manufacturer's right now. Whether you’re on the ice or the rink, proper-fitting skates are important not only for safety but also for performance. As is the case with shoes, skates often lack the necessary foundation to properly support our feet. However, most people don’t realize the importance of having a proper foot foundation in their skates, and many people never consider that a shoe insole can provide the support you need. What Makes an Insole a “Skate Insole”? Skates fit tightly on the feet, which means the first thing we look for in a skate insole is a low-profile design. The slimness of a skate insole will allow it to be worn in the skate without adding too much bulk, as excess bulk can actually cause more pain or a whole different set of problems. So the most important thing is to make sure the insole will fit comfortably inside a skate boot. When you have flat feet, it’s a no-brainer that you’ll never go without orthotics for medial arch support. Your feet feel so bad without them that there’s negative reinforcement for forgetting to add them to your shoes. The first thing that happens when you don’t wear arch support when you need it is your five foot bones (cuboid, navicular and three cuneiforms) in the area of your foot just in front of the heel will collapse. This doesn’t mean collapse as in breaking to pieces; the bones are solid and won’t do that. What it does mean is that the bones are supposed to form an arch in the foot and when they do, you can stand up straight, walk straight and run correctly without any undue pressure in any other part of the foot. The medial arch of the foot extends from the back of the foot to your toes. It’s also called the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. If you have low arches, your arch is called a flexible arch, meaning that it collapses and your feet are overly flexible when you walk or run.
